"With Friends Like These” Review
“Through others we become ourselves,” said Lev S. Vygotsky. To me, this quote is talking about the people we are close to; we are defined those as a person by people. It’s about how we connect with others. Dorothy Rowe’s article “With Friends Like These” is an informational read because it gives information about the psychology of friendship. This article is good for all people because it informs every reader. Rowe’s personal experience allows her to write about this topic. Rowe’s personal background is that she has a doctorates degree in psychology. Rowe also has experience as a psychologist. In her article, she informs readers about why we have the friends that we do. Rowe’s purpose is to inform people about the psychology of friendship. The way that this article was written was is 1st person. Rowe uses pronouns like “we,” “us,” and “you.” This makes the article personal to me and to everyone else who read this article. Rowe’s article does not qualify for a research paper because there is no bibliography. She also did not copy and paste anything into this article. The structure of Rowe’s article flows very nicely, which makes it easier to read. This is important because normal people can read the article easily. Rowe’s article includes, section titles which are useful and practical for readers who want to know what the next section is about and remind them what they are reading. In her introduction, she includes the main claim early on. She does do a very good job with her hook because it makes you want to learn more about it. Rowe organized her article very well and added the section titles to really make it flow better. The transitions in her article help move readers smoothly through her ideas. Rowe’s main claim is evident in both the introduction and the conclusion. Her hook was very good, and it needed to be there because it made me want to learn more about the entire article. The hook may be less effective for people who are not interested in this topic. The conclusion finished Rowe’s thoughts clearly. Throughout the article she repeats the word “validation,” since she argues this is central for friendship. Rowe’s main support is her own personal and professional experience with psychology. Rowe’s articledoes not include a bibliography. It includes good basic information, but it would not be enough for in-depth research. Rowe’s experience about psychology makes this article worthwhile. This is very important to me because it shows that she did not just get it off the internet or from someone else; this is just what she thought of herself. Her writing style is basic because she writes very personal and relatable information in a way that makes it feel as though she is talking to you through the article. Rowe’s format is easy to follow. The transitions in her article are very smooth. In Rowe’s introduction and conclusion, she restates the main claim.Throughout her entire article she repeats that claim. This article was very interesting to read because it talked about things that had to do with me as a person. She talked about personal things all people can relate to even though she has never met them. I would say that this article is very useful to everyone. Work Cited Rowe, Dorothy.
